9 Feb - The Constitution of the Republic of Namibia is adopted by consensus by the Constituent Assembly.
   

16 Feb - The Assembly meets to elect Mr. Sam Nujoma (President of SWAPO) as the first President of Namibia.

9 March - The Assembly approves the Coat of Arms of Namibia.

16 March - The Constituent Assembly meets for the last time for the ceremonial signing of the Constitution by all its members.

21 March - Namibia attains her Day of Independence as the Constitution of the Republic of Namibia enters into force at midnight.

- The first president, Sam Nujoma, is sworn in by the UN Secretary General, Dr. Javier Perez de Cuellar just after midnight.

- The President swears in the first Prime Minister, Hage Geingob.

- At 09h00, President Nujoma swears in the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Namibia, Judge Hans Berker.

- The Constituent Assembly is convened into a National Assembly and its members are sworn in by Chief Justice Berker. The first Speaker of the Assembly is elected.
At 14h00, the first Cabinet is sworn in.
